About the tour

In this tour you will discover the oldest city in the Netherlands. We will walk to the Keizer Karelplein (Charlemagne Square), and passing in front of the Concertgebouw De Vereeniging, we will arrive at Molenstraat Street to continue entering the historic center of the city. Through the Koningsplein, with its cozy cafes and terraces, we reach Mariënburg. The Arsenaal building and the historic Mariënburg Chapel, which today houses the ‘Historical House’ of Nijmegen, are surprising. The unevenness offered by this area has been used to build a modern and lively shopping street in two heights.

We continue our free walking tour through the pedestrian center to reach the Town Hall, with its 16th century facade. A little further, we arrive at one of the most beautiful and oldest places in the city, the Valkhof park. In it we will discover Roman ruins, a very rare Byzantine chapel in this part of Europe, and a 17th-century Renaissance watchtower that offers spectacular views of the Waal River and the bridge that crosses it. The 1936 bridge was one of the strategic points during World War II, where Nazi and Allied troops fiercely fought during the failed ‘Operation Market Garden’ in 1944.

Walking and enjoying the views on the river bank, with its terraces and constant passage of boats, we approach through the Jewish quarter to the Korenmarkt, with the splendid building of the Commanderie Van St. Jan monastery. Although rebuilt, the building dates from the 1196, and is currently a pleasant bar-restaurant and brewery.

Then we will arrive at the Grote Markt, where we can appreciate the wonderful building of the Waaggebouw. Right next door, we will be surprised by the beauty of the facade of the Latin School, next to the imposing Church of San Esteve.

Finally, through the oldest shopping street in the Netherlands, we will arrive at the pleasant and relaxing park of the Kronenburgerpark, where the towers of the old wall are still preserved and where we will put an end to our guruwalk through the amazing Nijmegen!

Fantástico! Jordi nos ha mostrado una ciudad fascinante con mucha historia y que desconocía totalmente. Merece la pena desplazarse desde Amsterdam a pasar el día y conocer una zona distinta. Muy recomendable.
