Tour description

In the heart of the University of Coimbra. Then, we get to know the University and how everything in the City of Mondego revolves around the oldest University in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. Which brings us to the end of the 13th century (March 1, 1290), when the King of Portugal, D. Dinis, officially, and together with other elements of the Portuguese clergy, began the General Studies. In other words, the University of Portugal. Until we reach the Mondego river we will visit one of the cities with the most history in Europe. We realized, as we passed the Sé Nova / Igreja de Jesus, of the Machado de Castro National Museum, which is the old Episcopal Palace and where we contemplate the Roman crypto-portico. Hence the reference to Conimbriga and when Aeminium becomes "Sedis Episcupus". Right here, still in the old town, we come to the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Coimbra - Sé Velha. A monument of Romanesque style and that, in everything, represents us through its traces marked on the yellow stones, over time, the passing of the centuries since the First King of Portugal D. Afonso Henriques. Here, on the north side, we see the Porta Especiosa, a 16th century Renaissance building. one of the highest points of those who visit Portugal. We walk towards Praça 8 de Maio, where we find the imposing Santa Cruz de Coimbra Monastery and its Church. Here, from Praça 8 de Maio. Rua da Sofia, in the 16th century, and with all the University Colleges is now, and since 2013, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The imposing Monastery of Santa Clara a Nova / Church of Rainha Santa Isabel. The view from the Monastery to the University City is worthy of numerous photographs. As soon as you cross the Santa Clara bridge and cross the Mondego river, we have the venue where Queima das Fitas is held every year, a typical festival of the students of the University of Coimbra. From the Rainha Santa Isabel viewpoint, we can rest and catch our breath contemplating one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
